On a personal level, I can only say that I also find digitisation somewhat exhausting. At least with me, you have a Netflix subscription where you can get films and series, and lots more. Then you use an Amazon service, have more videos to watch, have Spotify with music and in streaming everything is always available everywhere. You have a small smartphone in your pocket which can give you movies, series and everything. You have flat rates everywhere and I find that somehow, honestly, exhausting. I mean in the past, as a child or as a teenager, you always wished to have everything available and now it is and somehow it is great and I use it regularly, but I also often have moments when I am simply overwhelmed or even bored because so much is available everywhere, infinitely. And I think, especially with series and films, the quantity is clearly more dominant than the quality. I mean, in the past, people used to look forward to movies until they came out and watched them in the cinema, and nowadays: oh my God, that’s already on Netflix, I’ve seen that already, they’re recommending something here now. And I think the quality has really gone down in many areas. And that’s why, to be honest, in the age of digitalization I often like to be offline.

Nowadays, it can be said that in both the private and the business sector, all malware attempts to access your computer via e-mail. These are mostly so-called phishing mails, i.e. extremely well faked mails that are very credible. In the past they were often identified by their poor spelling. Nowadays, as a professional, I sometimes find it difficult to look at them and say at a glance that the mail is fake. Some of these refer to actually advertised vacancies and are sent to a company. When this reaches the application department and there is a Word file attached, which may contain the CV, everything looks safe at first. The receiving of such mails alone is not dangerous. But usually, if you open the document and then follow the steps in the document, two or three clicks are already too much. For example, a blackmailing Trojan has already been caught. This is a very common pest, for example. A Trojan that usually infects the computer using Windows and then encrypts files diligently in the background. This means that you no longer have access to your work documents, private photos are all encrypted. Then a ransom is extorted and if you don’t pay it, you won’t be able to access your files anymore. Basically, the blackmail is a good way to describe cybercrime at the moment. It is actually almost always about blackmail with private details. There are also mails that are circulating claiming “I filmed you consuming pornographic content”. Maybe everyone knows that, this was a big wave. And then it is claimed that the author has more personal data. This is then demonstrated with a password, which perhaps even belongs to you. This then comes from a password leak. But otherwise there is not much behind it. You really have to be careful with such mails! It’s best to delete such mails immediately, otherwise an infection can occur quite fast.

Basically there are two factors to protect computers from Trojans and cybercrime. The first factor is the person sitting in front of the computer. This means that you must not click on any links in mails or open file attachments without thinking about it. It has already paid off to call the colleague from whom the mail seems to have come, to find out whether he really sent a file to secure yourself again. This is often easier, even if it takes a few seconds, than having to spend thousands of euros later because you have caught a Trojan on the net. This means that you really have to train employees on it. Especially in human resources departments, you can’t expect the people who work there to be so IT-affine that they will immediately identify such phishing and spam mails. That means training employees to make them pay attention. The second factor is that you install protection software on a Windows computer, of course, which can ward off Trojans and viruses. These are so-called virus scanners that monitor the system in real time and log all file accesses and intervene if necessary. This means that if a Trojan is detected, the program blocks the access and it is immediately deleted. And with Windows 10, an anti-virus protection software is included and active by default. That is Windows Defender and we at CT would say that for private users this is actually sufficient as a protection solution. Of course, you should not move around on any pirated pages and click on everything there. Because then such a protection solution cannot really protect you anymore. Usually it is enough, if you want to have something in addition, to install a free antivirus scanner. In companies or large enterprises this looks different again. With complex networks and directories and so on, it makes sense to implement more comprehensive protection solutions, which of course have to be maintained by the admins. Otherwise the protection solutions are sometimes not very useful.

In the completely digitalised and networked world, I find it dangerous, especially for children, because everything is now available on the Internet. They can google information, they can somehow google their class test results and so on or download their homework completely. This is to an extent that I do not know from my school days. The Internet was just starting up a little bit then and today, I think, the keyword “media competence” is more important than ever before. If the child researches the Internet for a school project, how does the child know that the information he or she reads there is not fake news? Or that something is being denied? Or that it is coloured by some political direction or whatever in any way? Children definitely have to learn to classify and judge information, so that they can really move through the digitalised everyday life through media competence.
